When you attend a business networking event the idea is to make contact with the other people and to look for potential business relationships.
When there are 50 people at a business networking event there are 2,500 potential direct contacts. And thousands more through the extended network as each person there knows a number of other people who are not at the event.
So to sit in a corner, expecting the others to make contact with you, or even worse, hoping they won't see you really defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

Business networking, as opposed to network marketing, is the active seeking and cultivation of business contacts to create a mutually beneficial WIN-WIN relationship.
The old cliche :"It's not what you know, but who you know" has never been truer. Business networking is about developing the Who-You-Know's.
Business networking events take many forms:

- Formal, structured events
- Informal events
- Leads cells and swap meets
